iCal primarily represents calendar events. It should not be assumed to carry the full reservation, payment, guest, or messaging record.
iCal Calendar Sync
iCal calendar sync uses the iCalendar data format to publish and import calendar events between systems, commonly so booked or blocked dates can be reflected across vacation rental calendars.
What does iCal Calendar Sync mean?
One system exposes a calendar feed and another system reads it. This can help keep date blocks aligned, but the information available is usually much narrower than a full reservation API.
An operator exports an iCal feed from one booking source and imports it into another calendar. When a new booking appears in the source feed, the receiving calendar can later reflect those dates as an event or block, subject to each platform's refresh behavior.
Why it matters in hospitality operations.
iCal is useful because it is simple and widely supported, but operators need to understand its limits. Sync timing, available fields, cancellations, and event detail depend on the systems involved.
See HOS integration boundaries →Keep the metric or concept attached to its operating context.
Definitions are useful when the underlying data and workflow boundaries stay consistent.
Updates may not be instantaneous because each receiving platform controls how often it refreshes imported feeds.
Two-way calendar alignment often requires each system to import the other's feed; one export alone does not automatically create full bidirectional sync.
A calendar block can indicate unavailable dates without explaining whether the cause is a booking, owner block, or maintenance event.
What not to assume.
Calling iCal a real-time full reservation integration.
Assuming one imported feed automatically creates two-way synchronization.
Treating every calendar event as a confirmed guest booking.
Assuming maintenance events should automatically block booking availability.
